Its complexity is also the trace of a city grown around separate railways.
JR Shinjuku opened in 1885. Odakyu, Keio and the subways later built their own terminals and city entrances. Today’s Shinjuku is not one station building enlarged many times; it is a district joining separate transport systems to retail, office and entertainment quarters. The public East–West Free Passage outside the JR gates opened in 2020 and was completed in 2024, reconnecting city sides long divided by railway space. Reading the operator boundaries does more than prevent a wrong turn—it reveals how Tokyo grew around railways.

No. Seibu-Shinjuku is a separate Seibu Railway station north-east of the main JR complex. Match the full station and operator before walking or transferring.
Are the Keio Line and Keio New Line the same platform?
No. They use different platform areas and maps. The Keio New Line connects with the Toei Shinjuku Line. Check the exact line before descending.
Which exit should I use for Busta Shinjuku?
From JR, the terminal’s official guide directs travellers to the New South Gate when it is available and gives the South Gate as the fallback outside its hours. Check the current gate status, bus company, departure floor and boarding point on the day.
