Walk at the speed of errands, not sightseeing
Choose a shopping street near the accommodation and arrive before shutters begin to close. Walk once without buying, noting which businesses solve everyday needs: vegetables, repair, medicine, prepared food, haircuts or community notices. Return to one shop for a modest purchase and ask one product question. The aim is not to discover a “hidden Japan,” but to notice a place residents already use openly.
A shotengai may be thriving, ageing, reinventing itself or all three at once. Empty shutters are not merely picturesque signs of the past; they can reflect real demographic and economic change. Avoid photographing faces and private work without consent, keep doorways clear and compare the street at two times of day. Buying from one useful shop is a more honest connection than treating the whole neighbourhood as a themed backdrop.
