A dish that appears suitable can contain stock, sauce or seasoning made from an unexpected ingredient. For a serious allergy, staff must confirm the ingredients and preparation method.

01

Do this first

  1. List each ingredient you must avoid in Japanese.
  2. Ask about stock, sauces, garnishes and shared frying oil.
  3. State whether traces or shared equipment are unsafe for you.
  4. Do not eat the dish if the restaurant cannot confirm.

02

What to expect in Japan

  • Vegetarian does not always mean that fish stock is absent.
  • Menus and staff knowledge differ between branches of the same chain.
  • A translation card supports a conversation; it does not certify that a dish is safe.

04 · A REAL TRAVEL MOMENT

The hidden ingredient is often in the seasoning

A bowl looks like vegetables and noodles, but the broth may contain fish, meat or another allergen. Pointing only at the visible topping is not enough. Name the ingredient, explain whether shared oil or equipment is unsafe, and give staff permission to say they cannot confirm.

Japanese food becomes more interesting when you notice that flavour can be built through stock, fermentation, sauces and seasonal garnishes—not only the main ingredient. The same complexity that makes a dish memorable also makes a precise allergy conversation important.
