Your clue
Multiple operators have separate gates; east and west exits lead to different city areas.
Yokohama’s brick buildings, Chinatown and long waterfront are not one period. They are traces of successive arrivals, trade, migration and rebuilding.
The port opens
The opening of the port brought trading houses, foreign settlements and new cultural exchange. Raw silk and tea were among the goods that connected Yokohama to global routes.
A trade fair signals reconnection during a constrained recovery
The Japan Foreign Trade Fair was held while postwar Yokohama was still heavily requisitioned and recovery was delayed. It signalled an attempt to reconnect with the port’s international role, not a return to normal life or trade all at once.
The earthquake and reconstruction remake the waterfront
The 1923 earthquake and fires killed and displaced people and devastated Yokohama; false rumours also led to violence against Korean and other residents. During reconstruction, disaster rubble was used to form the waterfront land where Yamashita Park opened in 1930.
Work began in 1983 to turn former shipyard and railway land into a waterfront centre that would connect Kannai and Isezakicho with the area around Yokohama Station. The result is not a preserved old port but a deliberate late-20th-century urban layer.
