05 · HOW THE CITY BECAME ITSELF

A city deliberately built around a castle

Nagoya’s castle grid began with a large, organised relocation. Many of the exceptionally broad central roads seen today belong to postwar reconstruction, so the modern city layers two different planning projects.

  1. 1610–1613

    Castle and town move together

    Construction of Nagoya Castle began in 1610. Residents, temples, merchants and craftspeople moved from Kiyosu, forming the basis of the present city.

  2. 1945–1959

    Air raids, loss and a rebuilt landmark

    Wartime air raids killed nearly 8,000 people in Nagoya and destroyed large parts of the city, including the castle towers and palace. The present reinforced-concrete tower dates from 1959; the Hommaru Palace is a later reconstruction opened fully in 2018, not an untouched original.

  3. An international port opens for Central Japan

    The Port of Nagoya opened for international trade on 10 November 1907. It grew into the logistics base for Central Japan’s manufacturing industries, linking inland production with world shipping routes.

  4. The Toyota story begins with looms

    Sakichi Toyoda established a prototype plant at Sako to develop automatic looms. The preserved site shows how textile engineering, repeated experiments and factory organisation became one foundation for the region’s later automobile industry.
