KYO-03 · DIRECT ANSWER
Do not follow “local trains” until you name the operator.
For JR local lines, follow the JR transfer gate and the exact line/destination. For the Kyoto City Subway Karasuma Line or Kintetsu Kyoto Line, expect a separate operator and gate. Keep every ticket until the full transfer is complete, and ask staff before leaving a paid area when the fare medium or gate is unclear.
Save one thing before travel
Save the complete onward route: operator, line, destination station and any train or seat product. “Kyoto” alone cannot tell you which gate to use.
On site, one boundary at a time
Pause at the Shinkansen concourse map. Match the receiving operator before choosing transfer gate or exit.
01 · LOCAL FINGERPRINT
Four clues that belong to Kyoto Station.
These are station-specific clues for reading the place, not generic travel tips.
Conventional-line transfer
Stay inside the JR system only when the ticket and route use JR. Match platform and destination after the transfer gate.
Karasuma Line below the station
This is Kyoto City Subway, not JR. Follow subway signs and confirm north/south gate and lift route.
Private railway toward Nara corridor
Kintetsu has its own gate and ticket conditions. The official map publishes normal transfer estimates, not mobility guarantees.
Keep every medium until finished
Paper tickets, IC cards, rail passes and reserved products may play different roles across gates.
02 · FIVE CHECKS IN ORDER
Confirm the hard-to-reverse choices first.
This sequence does not promise the fastest route. It reduces the cost of a wrong gate, boarding place or street exit.
- 01
Open the onward route with operator and destination visible.
- 02
Collect luggage and keep all tickets, seat documents and IC cards separate.
- 03
At the concourse, choose JR, subway or Kintetsu before a gate.
- 04
Ask staff if the ticket route and the physical gate do not agree.
- 05
After the gate, match platform, destination display and stopping pattern.
03 · THREE REAL MOMENTS
Open only the moment that matches yours.
You do not need to memorise the station. Open the matching situation and turn it into one next action.
01Shinkansen to JR for Arashiyama
JR Sagano Line is a rail route toward Saga-Arashiyama; the first task is staying within the correct JR transfer.
- Confirm JR Saga-Arashiyama as the station that fits the first destination.
- Use the JR transfer path rather than a street exit.
- Read the current platform and service display.
- Remember that other Arashiyama stations belong to other operators and sit elsewhere.
02Shinkansen to subway for central Kyoto
The Karasuma Line can reach Shijo, Karasuma Oike and northern districts without beginning on a crowded city bus.
- Confirm the Subway Karasuma Line and receiving station.
- Follow one current official transfer route from the Shinkansen side.
- Enter through the correct subway gate with the accepted fare medium.
- At the destination, verify the lift and street exit separately.
03Shinkansen to Kintetsu
Kintetsu serves its own corridor from Kyoto Station and is not reached through a JR local-line platform.
- Open the Kintetsu route and exact train product.
- Follow Kintetsu signs to its gate.
- Confirm the required fare and any seat product before boarding.
- Use current Kintetsu platform and destination information.
04 · THE ROUTE CHANGES WITH THE TRAVELLER
Luggage, time and mobility are part of the route.
Published minutes are not a promise
Crowding, luggage, lifts, ticket questions and an unfamiliar gate add time.
Ask before the gate
Boarding assistance and the lift route depend on the actual operator, train and station condition.
Protect the ticket before improvising
If a reserved connection is missed, ask the responsible operator what the ticket still permits.
05 · IF THE PLAN BREAKS
Do not recover fast; recover from a small known point.
Do not enter another gate or queue while uncertain. Rebuild from a staffed public point.
- 01
Do not force a ticket through a gate that rejects it.
- 02
Step aside without blocking the gate and keep every ticket.
- 03
Show the complete onward booking to staff of the receiving operator.
- 04
Restart from operator, gate, train and seat—not from the platform number alone.

06 · QUESTIONS TRAVELLERS ASK
Questions for this exact moment.
Can I transfer from Shinkansen to JR without leaving the station?
There are JR transfer gates, but the valid route depends on your tickets and destination. Follow the current JR map and ask staff before using an ordinary exit.
Is the Kyoto subway part of JR?
No. Kyoto City Subway is a separate operator and gate. A route may require leaving one paid area and entering another with the correct fare medium.
How long is the Kintetsu transfer?
Kintetsu publishes normal transfer estimates, but they do not include every traveller’s luggage, crowding, lift route, ticket purchase or assistance. Build a personal buffer.
Can one IC transport card cover every transfer?
An accepted IC card can cover many ordinary fares, but it cannot replace every reserved-seat product, limited-express ticket or pass condition. Match the actual train and product.
