“Central” is a gate name; north or south is the city decision.
Use Karasuma/north for Kyoto Tower, the main city-bus terminal and many north-side addresses. Use Hachijo/south for south-side hotels, many coach pickup points and the Kintetsu side. The JR Central Gate faces north, but another operator may use different wording. Match operator, named gate, floor and destination before moving.
Save one thing before travel
Save the destination name and full Japanese address. Ask the accommodation which named gate and side they use—not only “Kyoto Station.”

02Taxi to an address you cannot place
Both north and south have taxi boarding points; the useful side depends on the destination.

- Ask which taxi side avoids crossing the tracks by road.
- Use the current official taxi-stand map.
- Join only the queue for that side.
03Meeting a companion from another operator
Two people can both be “at Kyoto Station” on different floors and sides.
- Choose one operator-neutral public landmark.
- Share floor and north/south side.
- Say whether the point is inside or outside a paid area.
- If either person is unsure, meet at a staffed information point instead of walking simultaneously.
