Tokyo Station: Marunouchi or Yaesu?

Choose the correct side before the gate, understand the deep platforms, and turn Japan’s central rail gateway into a calm first arrival.

Do this before you leave the paid area

Stop beside a wall or pillar, not in the passenger flow. Read the Japanese address of your destination and look for one of two words: Marunouchi (丸の内) or Yaesu (八重洲). If neither appears, match the building or bus terminal to a side using the cards below.

  1. Name your railway operator first: JR East conventional lines, JR Central Shinkansen, another Shinkansen operator, or Tokyo Metro.
  2. Choose the side—Marunouchi or Yaesu—before choosing an individual gate.
  3. If you arrived on a deep or distant platform, allow the signs to lead you to the main concourse before deciding you are lost.
  4. Keep the gate name on screen until you reach street level; “Tokyo Station” alone is not enough.

Choose from the place you need—not an exit in isolation.

Two places described as “by the station” can sit across tracks, a major road or several underground levels.

01Choose Marunouchi

For the station building, palace side and Marunouchi offices

Follow Marunouchi gate signs if the address names Marunouchi, Otemachi, the Imperial Palace side, KITTE or the Tokyo Station Hotel. The red-brick façade is on this side; reaching the wrong end of the building can still add a tiring outdoor walk.

02Choose Yaesu

For many Shinkansen transfers, buses and the Yaesu district

Yaesu is usually the clearer side for the highway-bus terminal and addresses east of the station. Shinkansen gates occupy the east side, but do not leave the paid area merely because you see “Yaesu”: first confirm whether your ticketed transfer stays inside the railway gates.

03Do not rush

If you arrived on the Keiyo or deep underground platforms

Some platforms feel like another station because the walk to the central area is long or vertical. Keep following the named transfer or exit signs. A route app may show only the train arrival time, not the time your group needs to reach the gate with luggage.

01From a JR conventional line to your hotelYour most important fact is not the train line you used; it is the side and named gate nearest the hotel.
  1. Open the hotel address in Japanese.
  2. Match Marunouchi or Yaesu before following a gate.
  3. Use an information counter if the address gives only a building name.
  4. After the gate, stop once and match a permanent building before walking.
02Between Shinkansen and JR local trainsA transfer gate is different from an outside exit. Keep every ticket and follow the operator and line name.
  1. Check whether the display says transfer, not exit.
  2. Insert or present the tickets exactly as instructed at the gate.
  3. Confirm direction and service type on the next departure board.
  4. Ask staff immediately if a ticket is retained unexpectedly.
03From the station to a highway bus“Tokyo Station bus” can refer to more than one boarding place. The terminal name and floor matter.
  1. Read the full terminal and operator name on the booking.
  2. For Bus Terminal Tokyo Yaesu, move toward the Yaesu side and then follow the terminal’s official access signs.
  3. Confirm the departure floor and boarding number on the current display.
  4. Arrive early enough to recover from a wrong building or basement level.

Let luggage, weather and access needs change the route.

The shortest route is not automatically the best route for every traveller.

With large luggage

Decide storage or delivery before a complex transfer. Tokyo Station City lists lockers and staffed baggage services, but size, vacancy and hours vary; use the official availability information rather than assuming the nearest locker is free.

Step-free travel

An elevator icon at one point does not prove an uninterrupted route. Check the full operator map from platform to the chosen street-side exit, and ask staff before entering a gate if lift maintenance could break the chain.

With children

Choose a meeting rule before moving: if separated, nobody crosses a gate. Use toilets before the long platform walk, keep hands free on escalators, and let faster passengers pass rather than matching their pace.

In heavy rain

The underground network can reduce exposure but also hide your direction. Keep the named building or exit—not a compass arrow—as your anchor, and check whether the final street crossing is covered.

Why the two sides feel like different cities

Tokyo Station opened in 1914 as a central station for the growing capital. The Marunouchi building—designed by architect Kingo Tatsuno—faced the ceremonial and administrative heart of the city. After wartime damage, the building was rebuilt and later restored to its historic three-storey form. That history is visible before you even begin sightseeing.

Yaesu developed a different rhythm: Shinkansen movement, buses, offices, shops and streets leading toward Nihombashi. The station therefore works less like a single front door than a hinge between two urban worlds. Choosing a side is not a minor exit trick; it is the first act of reading Tokyo.

IF YOU ARE ALREADY LOST

If you went wrong, recover before you rush.

  1. If you exit on the wrong side, do not immediately enter another paid gate. Ask for the east–west passage or the simplest street-level route.
  2. If you cannot find a gate name, return to the last large concourse display rather than following the crowd.
  3. If the group separates, meet at one named gate or official information counter—not “under the station clock”.
