Can I shop in Tokyo Station without taking a train?

Yes. Use a paper admission ticket or Suica’s Touch de Ekinaka for JR East’s conventional-line area. Check the shop’s gate-side location first.

Trip Pocket

Yes. You can visit shops behind Tokyo Station’s JR East conventional-line gates without a train journey by paying for station admission. As checked on 24 October 2026, the charge is ¥160 for an adult or ¥80 for a child. Choose a paper admission ticket or Suica’s Touch de Ekinaka service; their two-hour limits start at different moments. Shops outside the gates do not require station admission.

01

Find the shop before paying to enter

  1. Open the shop’s official listing. 改札内 means inside the ticket gates; 改札外 means outside. Check the floor and today’s opening hours.
  2. For a paper ticket, ask for a nyūjōken (入場券) at a ticket machine or staffed ticket counter. Buy it shortly before entering.
  3. For Touch de Ekinaka, use the eligible JR East conventional-line automatic gates and leave Tokyo Station through an eligible automatic gate within two hours. You may use a different eligible gate at the same station. The charge is deducted from your Suica balance on exit.

A bento stop behind the gates

  • Gransta lists Ekibenya Matsuri (駅弁屋 祭) on the first-floor central passage, inside the gates. It is a concrete example of a shop to plan admission for when arriving from the street.
  • Gransta Tokyo also has shops outside the gates. Save the individual shop’s location rather than treating the whole shopping area as one paid zone. Check food storage instructions and plan when to eat before buying.

I only want to visit a shop inside the gates, without taking a train. Where can I buy an admission ticket?

04 · A WORKED EXAMPLE

Buying a ticket before lunch

Suppose you buy a paper admission ticket at 12:00, then enter at 12:30. Its two-hour allowance still runs from 12:00. Waiting outside has already used 30 minutes.

Keep the issue time visible and leave time to walk back from the shop.

05 · MAKE THE DECISION USEFUL

If the visit includes another train or gate

Station admission only covers time inside the station. These plans need a different check.

Arriving by JR just to shop, then returning

Gransta asks visitors coming by JR for shopping to exit the station gates once before or after shopping and obtain a ticket for the return journey. With Suica, tap out at Tokyo before tapping in for the return. Riding here and back without exiting is not a Touch de Ekinaka visit; if you have already done that, tell staff the route you travelled and pay the fares for those sections.

Meeting someone on a Shinkansen platform

Touch de Ekinaka does not open Shinkansen gates, including Tokaido Shinkansen gates. Buy a paper admission ticket before entering that area and ask staff how to use it with any ticket or IC card already used. If you only want to shop, check the shop location before heading toward a Shinkansen gate.
