05 · HOW THE CITY BECAME ITSELF

Osaka was an international gateway before it was a merchant city

Water explains much of Osaka: ancient envoys, river transport, markets and today’s bay all belong to a long history of moving people and goods.

  1. 5th–7th c.

Naniwazu connects Japan with the continent

Naniwazu received envoys and technologies from China and the Korean Peninsula and became a departure point for Japanese missions to the Sui and Tang courts.

The court moved to Naniwa Nagara Toyosaki Palace. Even after the capital moved again, the area continued to serve as a sub-capital and international gateway.

  3. 1583–1730

Castle, canals and rice markets make a national exchange

Hideyoshi began Osaka Castle in 1583, and canals drew merchants and industries into a dense water city. Under Tokugawa rule, goods converged on Osaka; from 1730 the licensed Dojima Rice Exchange helped set rice prices across Japan.

  4. 1925–1937

Greater Osaka builds its modern north–south spine

Osaka expanded in 1925 and briefly became Japan’s largest city by population and area. Midosuji opened in 1937 as the broad boulevard linking Umeda and Namba, giving the industrial metropolis a new civic axis.
