Ask the airlines to confirm one complete connection: whether you enter Japan, whether baggage is checked through, whether you already hold the next boarding pass, which terminal and gate area you use, and which security screening applies. Narita has airside international-connection buses and public terminal shuttles, but eligibility differs; some airline combinations require immigration. Never leave the restricted route merely because a public bus looks easier.

The next flight uses another terminal or procedure
Keep baggage-through status, boarding pass, entry requirement, security side and airline instruction together. Public terminal buses and international transit buses are not substitutes; some connections require entering Japan.
Information counters and current maps
Keep terminal, floor, before/after security and opening time with every service. A terminal PDF can age; the airport map and staffed counter own the current location.
Immigration
Keep the passport and official arrival preparation ready. If you need a passport stamp, ask staff before leaving the immigration area; automated or facial-recognition use may not produce one.
Baggage claim
Match airline and flight number to the carousel, then match the baggage tag before leaving. A missing or damaged checked bag belongs first to the airline or handling desk inside this area.
Customs declaration
Complete the personal-effects and unaccompanied-articles declaration through the current official route. If uncertain, ask before crossing the final inspection boundary.
Public arrival lobby
Only here do transport counters, public meeting points, delivery and city access become the next task. Do not let a driver solicitation or an old ticket screenshot replace the official counter and current departure display.

Scene
An international arrival connects to another flight under a separate booking. The passenger sees the next flight on a phone, but does not yet know whether baggage is checked through, whether entry into Japan is required or which terminal owns the next check-in.
Decision
Before following a generic transfer arrow, show both bookings and baggage tags to the operating airlines. Confirm immigration, customs, bag collection, recheck, security, terminal transfer eligibility and the airline deadline as one sequence. Public shuttle buses and airside transit buses serve different travellers and cannot be treated as substitutes.
Recovery
If any answer is unclear, remain before the irreversible boundary and contact the airline responsible for the next segment. Missing a flight is not solved by running toward a terminal name when the bag or entry process still sits behind you.
