01 · THE SMALL MENTAL MAP
Two terminals, one runway boundary, three onward choices
The subway belongs to the domestic-terminal side. International arrivals choose between the free shuttle, a bus from the international access hall, or another official road connection.
International Terminal
International arrivals reach a first-floor public area and access hall. The subway is not beneath this building; direct local or highway buses may avoid an unnecessary terminal transfer.

The official free shuttle links the international and domestic buildings around the runway. The representative ride is about ten minutes, but traffic, waiting, boarding and the walk to the subway add more.

Fukuoka Airport Station is under the domestic terminal. The subway is excellent for many Hakata and Tenjin journeys, but international travellers reach it only after the terminal shuttle unless another route is chosen.

04 · RECOVERY BELONGS INSIDE THE ROUTE
Keep the owner of each problem and a staffed recovery point.
Recover late night, weather, children, assistance, connections and baggage separately.
The useful final connection has ended
Finish one-way arrival tasks, remain at a staffed public point and compare official taxi, a confirmed airport-area stay or the next operating service. Do not build a route from daytime fragments.
Shuttle, road or city transport is disrupted
Check the airport shuttle, city subway, road bus and JR as separate systems. The airport’s closeness to the city does not merge their statuses.
A child needs a reset before the next boundary
Use a public-side family facility before the terminal shuttle, subway gate or regional departure, then rebuild the protected buffer.
Assistance changes owner
Confirm the airline-to-airport handoff, terminal shuttle boarding, subway or bus support and city-side exit separately.
A domestic or international connection crosses terminals
Follow the airline and airport transfer procedure before assuming the public shuttle. Baggage, security and immigration ownership decide the valid route.
The bag is missing or too difficult for the next transfer
Report missing checked baggage before leaving claim. On the public side, compare delivery only after confirming provider, deadline, destination and who receives it.

Before the civilian gateway
The site’s modern history includes the former Mushiroda airfield and military use. The airport story therefore begins before today’s compact city connection.
Itazuke and the post-war handover
Post-war U.S. military use and the later return of Itazuke Air Base shaped the transition to Fukuoka Airport. Civil convenience sits beside a longer political history.
Fukuoka Airport begins
Operation as Fukuoka Airport began in 1972 after the transfer. Passenger growth then drove successive terminal development.
The subway reaches the airport
Fukuoka Airport Station opened in 1993, creating the unusually compact domestic-terminal city connection visitors know today.
International and domestic split across the runway
The international passenger building opened on the west side in 1999, leaving the domestic side and subway across the runway. Today’s shuttle decision is a result of that development.
A congested urban gateway keeps changing
Redevelopment, operating reform and the international access hall respond to heavy demand in a dense city. Construction and boarding places can change, so current airport information remains part of the guide.
