Wheelchair arrival at Tokyo, Shinjuku and Kyoto stations

Verify one continuous route across platforms, gates, operators and street-level exits, and keep a staffed recovery point when any link changes.

USE NOW · FIRST DECISION

Ask for the whole chain before the first gate

Tell staff the exact destination and actual needs: wheelchair type and size, whether transfers or ramps are acceptable, and whether assistance was arranged. “Is there a lift?” is too small a question; the useful question is whether one usable route continues to the chosen exit.

  1. Name the operator, line, platform and destination building.
  2. Ask for one continuous step-free route to a named street-level exit.
  3. Confirm where staff assistance begins, transfers and ends.
  4. Save a staffed information point to return to if a lift or passage changes.

DECIDE BEFORE YOU ADD

One accessibility icon is not a route

Set the decision axes before adding more to the day. The cards also work as a quick on-site check.

TOKYO

Deep and distant platforms

Sobu/Yokosuka and Keiyo approaches can add substantial vertical or horizontal movement. Choose Marunouchi or Yaesu first, then verify the lift chain for that side.

SHINJUKU

Operator boundaries are route boundaries

JR, Odakyu, Keio, Tokyo Metro and Toei occupy different systems. A lift in one station does not certify the transfer to another.

KYOTO

North, south and onward transport

The railway arrival must connect to the correct Karasuma/north or Hachijo/south side, then to the hotel, taxi, subway or bus without a broken segment.

ASSISTANCE

Time and staff are part of the route

Boarding ramps, guidance and inter-operator handoffs may take time or require advance contact. Build that time into the journey instead of treating it as delay.

OPEN YOUR SITUATION

Three station arrivals, step by step

Only the first situation is open. Use the part that matches you instead of reading a long article from the beginning.

01Tokyo Station: choose the city side before the exitThe red-brick Marunouchi side, Yaesu transport side and deep platforms create different route chains.
  1. Open the destination’s Japanese address and choose Marunouchi or Yaesu.
  2. Tell staff the arrival platform and exact exit or building.
  3. Confirm whether a transfer gate, outside gate or public passage is required.
  4. At street level, verify the final curb, road crossing and entrance—not only the station lift.
02Shinjuku Station: do not improvise between operatorsA route app can hide paid-area boundaries and the lift position on a different floor.
  1. Write the exact operators for arrival and departure.
  2. Ask whether staff can hand the assistance request to the next operator.
  3. Use a named gate and exit, not a compass direction alone.
  4. If a lift is unavailable, return to staff and request the official alternative; do not accept an unsafe manual carry.
03Kyoto Station: connect the station to the districtA step-free railway arrival can still fail at the wrong side, a crowded bus or a historic street entrance.
  1. Choose Karasuma/north or Hachijo/south from the destination.
  2. Confirm the station passage and lift route on the current JR West map.
  3. For onward sightseeing, compare rail close to the district with the full bus route.
  4. Ask the actual venue about entrance width, slope, toilet and assistance before committing.

PLAN BEFORE · EASY TO MISS

Information a wheelchair icon cannot hold

Dimensions and mobility devices differ

Door width, turning space, lift depth, ramp angle and platform gaps matter differently for manual chairs, powered chairs and mobility scooters. State the device type and dimensions when they are critical. A generic accessible label and a photograph cannot replace a measurement or operator confirmation; neither can another traveller’s successful route.

Assistance has a time and handoff

Ask how early to arrive, where to meet staff and whether the request transfers to the next operator. Save the request or reference number when one is provided. If you travel at an unstaffed or late period, verify the return as a separate service; assistance arranged for the outward trip should not be assumed to continue automatically.

UNDERSTAND JAPAN

Accessibility is a chain owned by more than one organisation

Tokyo Metro uses “one-route” to describe at least one route from ground to gate to platform through lift, slope, stairlift or wheelchair-accessible escalator. That is a useful station-level standard, but a traveller’s journey extends across another operator, the street and a destination building.

The honest planning unit is therefore the continuous route, with each link named and dated. BASE can hold verified facilities and Local Japan can explain the decision, but critical dimensions, equipment status and staff assistance must come from the responsible operator or venue.

IF THE PLAN BREAKS

Do not rush to recover; make the route smaller.

  1. If the planned lift is unavailable, remain at the staffed point and request an operator-approved alternative.
  2. If fatigue, pain or sensory load rises, stop before the next operator boundary; recovery is harder after a gate transfer.
  3. If the venue cannot confirm a usable entrance or toilet, replace the stop while the return route is still simple.
