Does your suitcase need a special Shinkansen seat?
For Tokyo–Kyoto, a suitcase over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in total dimensions needs a seat with an oversized baggage area. An ordinary reserved seat is not enough.

For a Tokaido Shinkansen journey such as Tokyo to Kyoto, a suitcase whose three dimensions add up to more than 160 cm and no more than 250 cm needs a seat with an oversized baggage area. Book that seat when booking the train. A normal reserved seat does not include the space behind the last row. The reservation-free storage on some decks does not remove this requirement for oversized suitcases.

Do this first
- Measure the packed suitcase: height + width + depth, including wheels and handles. Write down all three measurements before opening the booking screen.
- Check the train and route. This guide uses the Tokaido Shinkansen; check the responsible operator for other trains rather than applying one rule across Japan.
- If the total is over 160 cm, select “Seat with an oversized baggage area” for the journey you will take. Check that category in the completed reservation.
- If those seats are full, look for another departure or ask staff about your options before boarding. Keep the bag out of aisles and doorways.

What to expect in Japan
- A worked example: 75 + 50 + 35 = 160 cm. That is within the ordinary-size threshold; 76 + 50 + 35 = 161 cm crosses it. These invented examples compare size only, not weight or every carry-on condition.
- JR Central’s detailed definition is over 160 cm and up to 250 cm. Some overview wording differs at 250 cm, so show staff the actual dimensions if your bag is at that limit. Other carry-on limits still apply.
- The baggage-area seat costs the same as the corresponding ordinary or Green car reserved seat. It is a specific seat category, not a separate locker reservation.
- Booking-free deck storage is being trialled on some services. SmartEX still directs passengers with oversized baggage to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area. Do not use an empty rack as proof that no booking is needed.

One suitcase, two different reservations
Imagine you have an ordinary reserved seat from Tokyo to Kyoto and then measure your packed bag: 78 + 52 + 32 = 162 cm. The seat confirmation does not solve the baggage question. Open the reservation while still at the hotel and check whether you can change it to the required seat category. This is a planning example, not a live seat-availability report.
Put the bag size beside the train time in your notes. You are matching a person, a suitcase and one departure; “I booked the Shinkansen” leaves the storage condition unanswered.

Four changes to check before boarding
Use your actual bag and your actual booking as the starting point. These examples help you ask a precise question; they do not reserve space.
The total is exactly 160 cm
Exactly 160 cm does not cross the oversized threshold. Where the bag can be placed is a separate question: shape, weight and available space still matter. Re-measure with the case packed rather than relying on a shop’s size label. If you want to use the reserved space behind the last row, ask about the appropriate reservation.
Your train has an empty deck rack
A visible space and permission to use it are different things. The trial changes how some deck storage is used; it does not turn a 170 cm suitcase into an ordinary-size bag. Follow the booking category confirmed for your journey, and ask crew where to place it if the layout is unclear.
You have a stroller rather than a suitcase
JR Central lists strollers, musical instruments and sports equipment separately from the oversized suitcase requirement. That exception does not grant use of another passenger’s reserved baggage area. If your plan depends on that space, arrange the relevant seat rather than assuming the last row is communal storage.
You change trains or change the bag
An Osaka stop can turn one journey into two separate train bookings. Check each leg rather than assuming the first reservation covers the next train. The same applies if shopping adds an expanded suitcase: measure the bag you will board with. Leave time to revise the plan before departure.
