Using a coin laundry in Japan: wash, dry or both?
Read the machine name, separate clothes that cannot be tumble dried, and plan enough time to collect everything before your next journey.

Your bag is full of worn clothes, and tomorrow is a train day. Choose 洗濯乾燥 for washing and drying in one cycle only when every item allows both. 洗濯 means washing; 乾燥 means drying and will not clean dirty clothes. Check each care label before paying, and keep clothes that cannot be tumble dried out of a combined cycle.

Do this first
- Sort before you leave your accommodation. Check whether each item allows machine washing and tumble drying; these are separate permissions. Keep delicate or uncertain items aside.
- At the machine, match 洗濯 (wash), 乾燥 (dry) or 洗濯乾燥 (wash and dry) to what you need. A machine labelled 洗濯乾燥 may also offer a wash-only course: read the selected course, not just the machine name.
- Check the drum, the load line, the chosen course and the machine number. At Baluko, detergent is dispensed automatically in the washing machines and washer-dryers; do not add your own by habit. Check other operators separately.
- Read the payment instructions before inserting money. Baluko says its coin-operated machines do not give change; other payment options depend on the store. Keep the machine number and finish time with you and collect your clothes promptly.

What to expect in Japan
- Washing and tumble drying use different processes. Permission to wash an item does not mean that heat and tumbling are suitable for it. A low-temperature course does not override a “do not tumble dry” label.
- Give clothes room to move. Baluko explains that a tightly packed dryer dries poorly. Follow the machine’s load line rather than filling the drum to the door.
- Baluko’s FAQ says a running washer or washer-dryer is locked. Sort out items that need air drying before starting; do not plan to open a combined cycle halfway through.
- A displayed finish time is a planning aid. Towels and thick seams may still need attention. Leave time to check the result and fold it before leaving, rather than starting a cycle just before a reserved train.

One T-shirt needs a different plan
A made-up travel example: you have socks, towels and a favourite T-shirt. The T-shirt can be washed but its label rules out tumble drying. Putting everything in a wash-and-dry cycle solves one problem by creating another. Separate the T-shirt before starting.
If your accommodation has a permitted place to air dry it and enough time before checkout, washing it separately may work. If you cannot get it dry before departure, keeping that item aside or asking about a suitable laundry service may be the better plan.

Four decisions that change the plan
Choose from what you need to carry away: clean clothes, dry clothes, or both. The shortest-looking programme is useful only if it finishes the job your clothes allow.
Already washed, still damp
Dry-only is an option if the label permits tumble drying. Check pockets and the dryer load line, then inspect thick parts afterwards.
Everything allows washing and drying
A combined cycle avoids a transfer between machines. Match the permitted temperature and load to the selected course; permission on one item does not cover the whole bag.
Washable, but no tumble drying
Choose a wash-only course only if you have a permitted place and enough time to air dry the clothes. Do not start a combined cycle expecting to remove an item halfway through.
A special item or an unreadable label
Keep it out of the machine until you can check. A self-service laundry is different from a staffed cleaning service. The Japanese word 乾燥 means drying, not professional dry-cleaning.
