Sapporo is young as a planned municipality, but not as a place. Its name, rivers and many local names preserve Ainu language and the presence of Indigenous communities before modern development.
Before 1869
Ainu communities live along the rivers
Official city research records Ainu settlements and place names across the present city area. Modern development later restricted land, livelihoods and culture; the city’s history does not begin with the grid.
The Development Commission made Sapporo its base in 1869. Surveying and a grid divided by Odori and the Sosei River followed, with American engineers also involved in early development.
Sapporo Agricultural College opened in 1876 during government-led development on Ainu land. Its drill hall, completed in 1878, later became the Clock Tower and records an imported educational and building system alongside the history that development displaced.
The Winter Olympics reshape movement through the city
Sapporo hosted Asia’s first Winter Olympic Games. Preparation accelerated the subway, underground shopping streets, roads, district heating and sport venues, leaving a winter-city infrastructure that residents still use.
