CITY 08 · ARRIVAL DECISIONS

Yui Rail is the Naha spine, not an island-wide railway.

05 · HOW THE CITY BECAME ITSELF

A capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom and maritime Asia

Naha is not simply a southern version of a mainland Japanese city. Shuri and Naha formed the political, cultural and trading centre of a kingdom with its own diplomacy and routes.

  1. 14th–16th c.

The Ryukyu Kingdom’s great trading age

Ryukyu traded among China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. Shuri was the royal centre, while Naha Port and communities such as Kume connected the kingdom to maritime networks.

  2. 1879–1972

The kingdom ends; war and U.S. administration reshape the city

The establishment of Okinawa Prefecture in 1879 ended the Ryukyu Kingdom as a distinct polity. In 1945 the Japanese military used Shurijo and the U.S. attack formed part of the wider Battle of Okinawa, a catastrophe for civilians; the city then developed under U.S. administration until reversion to Japan in 1972.

  3. 1992–2000

    Shurijo returns as public heritage

After wartime destruction and decades as the University of the Ryukyus campus, the reconstructed Seiden and Shurijo Castle Park opened in 1992. In 2000 UNESCO listed the archaeological Shuri-jō Site with other Ryukyu properties; the designation does not mean every reconstructed building is itself the original World Heritage fabric.

  4. 2019–present

Fire makes reconstruction another historical layer

The 31 October 2019 fire destroyed the reconstructed Seiden and several buildings, but it did not destroy the whole World Heritage archaeological property. The rebuilding process is now interpreted publicly, showing materials, craft and the repeated work required to carry heritage forward.
