05 · HOW THE CITY BECAME ITSELF
A castle town rebuilt as a city of peace
Hiroshima’s history should not be reduced to one day. Understanding the castle town, wartime city, atomic bombing and citizen-led reconstruction gives the present city its full human scale.
Hiroshima begins as a castle town
Mori Terumoto began building Hiroshima Castle. The delta city grew around the castle and waterways into one of the country’s larger early-modern cities.
- 1945–1949
From destruction to a peace memorial city
The atomic bombing destroyed the city on 6 August 1945. The 1949 Peace Memorial City Construction Law made reconstruction as a symbol of lasting peace a national project.
- 1950–1955
Peace Memorial Park and Museum take shape
Work advanced under the 1949 Peace Memorial City Construction Law, and the park and museum opened in 1955. The memorial landscape was made within the former Nakajima neighbourhood, not on empty land, and must be read with the lives and testimony of people who were there.
- 1966–1996
Civic preservation carries the Dome to World Heritage
Everyone inside the former Industrial Promotion Hall died in the atomic bombing; it should not be romanticised as a miraculous building. The City Council resolved to preserve the remains in 1966, and citizen campaigns later helped secure World Heritage inscription in 1996.
