Yes, for an ordinary reserved-seat limited-express ticket: after missing N’EX, you can use a later service that day standing or in a vacant seat. The old reservation does not reserve the same seat on the next train. Discount products, passes and Green Car need their own checks.
01
Keep the ticket and identify the next journey
- Show the ticket or booking screen to JR staff. Check the product name, date, journey section and destination before choosing a replacement train.
- Still before departure? An unused ordinary paper ticket can normally be changed once to the same ticket type before travel starts and before the booked departure, with any price difference settled. Discount tickets have separate conditions.
- After the booked departure, the original reserved-seat limited-express ticket cannot be refunded. It does not provide a free replacement reservation.
02
Why a vacant seat is not a new reservation
- N’EX has reserved-seat cars. A seat-unassigned ticket is not an unreserved car: it allows use of a vacant seat under its conditions, and you must move if the reservation holder arrives.
- The base fare and limited-express ticket cover different parts of the purchase. Keep both available; a limited-express booking alone does not replace the base fare.

04 · A WORKED EXAMPLE
A delayed flight and a missed booking
Suppose your flight arrives late and you reach the station holding an ordinary ticket after the booked N’EX has left. Show staff the booking and the station you need to reach. Then check the destination of the proposed train; choosing it only because it leaves next can create another problem.
Keep the old seat number out of the new boarding plan. If standing would be difficult, explain that before boarding and ask what seating arrangements are available and what they cost.
05 · MAKE THE DECISION USEFUL
Read the product name on the booking
A phone screen does not identify the fare rules. Match the named product to its own official instructions.
Standard Eki-net ticketless
Eki-net’s rules allow a vacant seat on a later N’EX that day for the standard conventional-line ticketless limited-express ticket and the JRE POINT reward ticket. Check that exact product name; do not extend the rule to every discounted booking.
N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket
This product’s FAQ says a missed reservation permits a later train the same day without a change, but no assigned seat; vacate a seat when its reservation holder arrives. Other passes, packages and Green Car arrangements require their own conditions.
